If you're staying in Barra, the drive is similar in time but a bit shorter.
Copacabana and Ipanema are the most walkable, with everything you need – beach, restaurants, shops – within a short stroll. Many of the 5-star hotels here are directly on Avenida Atlântica or the beachfront, so you're never far from the sand. The metro system also runs as far as Ipanema, making it easy to reach downtown or the sights. Barra da Tijuca is more spread out and depends more on taxis or rental cars, although the beaches and malls are walkable from some resorts.
